Koi Pond photos

The koi pond photos on the right were taken at a friend's when I helped him build the pond. He had built a new house and the large rocks formed a retainer wall placed there by the builder. A 15 X 30 foot liner was used and 2 waterfalls were created between the rocks. After running the plumbing under the bottom and spreading the liner, we mortared flat rocks for the waterfall on top the liner. After the mortar setup we filled the pond and ran the pump to test the water flow over the rocks for the waterfall and test for leaks. Notice the liner is well above the water line at the waterfalls. I included photos taken 3 months later to show how the liner was hidden with rocks and plants. Notice the waterfall looks very natural like it's supposed to be there.

The photos to the left and bottom were taken from my ponds. I have two ponds with the lower pond running the full width of my property. This was originally a watershed and the bottom part became a bog when there was a lot of rain. All the large rocks came from the property except for the flag stone. The top picture was taken in the early spring and the tree in bloom is a wisteria. The next picture is the the same pond taken in the early fall of the same year. There are about 35 koi in this pond with 3 big koi in the top. The pond by my house was the first pond I made. It started in front of the stair landing. I added the part inside the walkway a few years later. The rock for the walkway came from a stream at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. I keep six large koi in the upper pond. As you can see from the photos, I have busted the myth that koi have no place in the water garden. You just have to keep in mind that koi grow to 3 feet and need plenty of room so the koi pond has to be larger and deeper with plenty of water flow, 3,000 GPH or more.
