Kumonryu

The Kumonryu Koi is a doitsu (scaleless) koi that has a black base with white markings that some have compared to the killer whale. The term kumonryu translates to nine-crested dragon. The unique feature of this koi is that the sumi black is unstable and can change with changes in ph and water temperature. They are described as being a forever tategoi.

When the Kumonryu are young the white can be more of a pale blue but as they mature it become more pure. Variations of the Kumonryu are the Beni Kumonryu and the Kikokuryu. The Beni Kumonryu is a cross between a Komonryu and a Kuhaku. The Kikokuryu is a metallic Kumonryu. The variations of the Kikokuryu are the Beni Kikokuryu and the Kin Ki Kikokuryu. These variations are determined by the base color, Beni being red and Ki is yellow.
